City Tours – Sample Itineraries
Itineraries are designed according to your interests and the amount of time you would like to spend exploring our city and environs. The highlights will give you some ideas about what is available and will be the foundation of our discussion on email to include what suits you.
around 2.5 hours on foot incorporating the historic city centre
A brief walking tour around the intimate heart of the historic city bowl. We will meet at the Cape Heritage Hotel, 90 Bree street and from here proceed on foot through the side streets, visiting The African market at Greenmarket Square, Adderley street, Company Gardens, Slave Precinct, and St George’s Cathedral. On route we will pass by art galleries, boutique shops and coffee shops, you can take a pause as convenient to you.
Castle, historic city centre, BoKaap. A longer city tour, around four – five hours
We will begin our tour at the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest building in South Africa and see the key ceremony at 10am (Monday-Friday). From here we will explore the city with a mixture of driving and on foot, visiting the Slave Precinct, Company Gardens, St George’s Cathedral and the African market at Greenmarket Square. On route we will pass by art galleries, boutique shops and coffee shops, you can take a pause as convenient to you. Finally we will take a walk through the historic Bo Kaap area and make a stop at the Streetwires beading studio.
City Tour with Cape Malay food experience
You can decide whether you are interested in the walking city tour, or the longer city tour (including the visit to the Castle), and then instead of simply walking though the Bo Kaap, have a cooking experience with one of the resident ladies. There are two options:
- Cape Malay snacks – samosa folding and then enjoy your samosas, chilli bites and koeksisters with some tea or juice. Takes around 45 minutes.
- Cape Malay cooking experience – prepare rotis, chicken curry and samosas and then enjoy lunch in their home, (this experience can also be enjoyed in the evening and makes a wonderful alternative to dining in a restaurant). Takes around 2.5 hours.
The snacks and cooking experience are more than just learning about the Cape Malay cuisine, it also about meeting local residents in their homes, learning about the history of Muslims in South Africa and the Islamic culture in Cape Town.
